Even though Déjàlà was built in 1972, nothing aboard is older than 2007.  Except for her shell, mast and compass, all has been replaced:  electrical, plumbing, through-hulls, pumps, sink, stove, windows, lifelines, rigging, lights, canvas, sails, cushions, electronics, fridge, motor, solar panels, etc.
Not counting labor, around $105,000 of improvements have been made to Déjàlà since her purchase at the end of 2005.  She was purchased for $15,000 and 2,000 hours worth of labor went into bringing her into the 21st century.

Déjàlà has been turned into an all-electric boat.  She used to have a Universal Atomic-4 motor.  Her battery bank consists of four AGM batteries in the deep part of the bilge.  The electricity is routed through a knife switch array to allow changing the operating voltage from 48VDC to drive the motor to 12VDC for operating house loads (lights, fridge, pumps, hookah, water-maker, electronics).
Charging the bank is by a combination of solar panels, tow-behind generator and shore power through a Magnum inverter/charger.

The motor set up is a 10kW running on 48-volt powered by four 12-volt 130AH batteries.  Our boat will motor at 3 knots in calm seas at 1.2kW.  The motor is sized to drive the boat in and out of harbors, marinas, anchorages (backing down on the anchor).  It is not for long-term “motor-sailing” for days on end.
Motoring into Mazatlán harbor
We could motor at 3 knots in calm seas for about 6 hours (20amp) to a 50% depth of charge but have never done it.  At full hull speed you only have 45min to 1 hour.  Déjàlà comes with a backup Yamaha 2000 generator which can be used to augment the range.
At anchor in Honeymoon Cove, Sea of Cortez
We have logged nearly 10,000nm of coastal cruising with our first electric motor (outboard moving in and out of a well).  Raising and lowering that motor became too difficult so in late 2015, we changed to an inboard combination and have sailed an additional 1,790nm with this new and improved Déjàlà.  The new motor has only pushed Déjàlà for 15.6nm (out of the 1,790nm sailed) or run for 7.75 hours.  We like to sail!

Déjàlà has always been varnished with Epiphane – the highest possible quality.  Except for the cabin-top handrails, all varnish is new and has 10 coats.

A few highlights:
  • Cockpit can be turned into bed for those warm nights at anchor.
  • 2008 – all new rigging with stronger larger diameter wires.
  • 2015 – 170 hours spent on new caprail.  Guatemalan Mahogany.  Back lazarette cover made with leftover caprail wood.
Brand new caprail
Should you want to turn her back into fuel power, you could take out the electric motor and batteries and replace them with gas engine and fuel tanks.  Probably an additional through hull would need to be installed.
Under sail testing the Hydrovane - works so well we use it about 95% of the time.  More reliable than autopilot.
After 5 solid years of sailing, we brought Déjàlà back to port to improve many things in preparation for our next destinations.  We learned a lot during our 10,000 miles of sailing and were reconfiguring Déjàlà to our taste and needs as we were getting older and hopefully wiser.
New motor, new propeller, new solar panels, new caprail, new batteries, new bow roller, a couple new spare anchors.

For a list of all that is on Déjàlà and the year it was purchased/installed see tabs above or the list below.  She is a unique all-electric boat that has served us well and is very safe and comfortable.
The main thing people notice when they come aboard is the lack of smell (no fuel/oil in the bilge), the lack of vibration, and how quiet she is.  Hope you get as much enjoyment out of her as we did.
We are on the left
She is ready to go on her next adventure.

Getting her ready to be covered in plastic
Sale is as-is.  Putting her in the water for a test drive would mean taking down her cover and putting her in the water which would equate to thousands of dollars.
